Industry Classification and NAICS/SIC Codes

Prev Next

The North American Industry Classification System (NAICS)/Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) codes describe the nature of an organization’s type of business. Your company may prefer to use NAICS/SIC codes to apply filters for segmentation.

NAICS Update Status

We’ve updated our NAICS codes to the 2022 (most current) standard. This standard is updated every five years.

How 6sense Sources and Maps NAICS/SIC Codes

We use several data sources to corroborate what NAICS code should apply to an organization. To protect data quality, these sources must also reach an internal confidence threshold before we apply a code.

We first determine an organization’s NAICS code and then determine the associated SIC code.

Multiple NAICS Codes

The NAICS standard allows a company to have at most two codes: a primary and a secondary code.

We choose one NAICS code per company account. When choosing an NAICS code, we select the more general code (four digits or less) to capture a larger industry rather than a more specific code (five or six digits).

For example, Proctor & Gamble (P&G) is a huge company with several subsidiaries that could have several different codes that describe them statistically. In this case, P&G is assigned a more general code, such as 814 (Private Household) or 325 (Chemical Manufacturing). Charmin, a P&G subsidiary, could either be assigned the same code as P&G or a more specific code like 325620 (Toilet Preparation Manufacturing).

International Use of NAICS Codes

Although the NAICS standard was devised for and is primarily used by the U.S., Canada, and Mexico, NAICS codes can be applied internationally. So, we do apply NAICS codes to companies in countries outside the U.S., Canada, and Mexico.

NAICS/SIC Historical Context

NAICS/SIC codes NAICS codes were introduced in 1997 to replace the older SIC codes. Both systems were in use in parallel for many years in some parts of the United States government.

NAICS codes are updated every five years, and the latest update was in 2022. SIC codes haven’t been updated since 1987 (because the standard was replaced by NAICS).
