Industry taxonomy update

Historically, most ABM vendors have defined industry attributes using SIC and NAICS codes. While these standards have served as the industry benchmark for many years, they often fail to capture modern industry verticals that customers increasingly seek to target. To address this gap, 6sense developed a new AI-driven taxonomy (data dictionary) that more accurately reflects today’s business landscape.

Key enhancements

  1. Modern industry classification
The new taxonomy includes updated industry labels such as “Internet” and “Software,” rather than grouping diverse sectors under a broad category like “Technology.” This allows for more precise and relevant sales targeting.

  2. Sub-industry layering
A new layer of granularity enables targeting at the sub-industry level. For example, instead of broadly targeting “Business Services,” users can now select specific sub-industries such as:

    • ConsultingMarketing & AdvertisingLegalHuman ResourcesTax, Accounting, and AuditSecurity

You may select one or more sub-industries when building a segment.

  3. Multi-industry classification
Accounts are no longer limited to a single industry. 6sense’s AI model can classify an account into multiple industries and sub-industries based on its business characteristics. For example, in the legacy model, Starbucks might appear only under “Food and Beverage.” In the new model, it can also be classified under “Restaurants & Bars.” The platform prioritizes and ranks industries based on their relevance to the account.
